Did your Irish Ancestors settle in Leicestershire?
Whilst researching two branches of my family tree i became aware of a gap in census information regarding two very important direct family members. The surnames gave no great clue as i thought to both families being Irish but they most definitely were!
I am compiling with your help a list of surnames of settlers in Leicestershire and Rutland who came here from around the 1840's onwards with Surname, County and if possible the Location that they came from. Over time it will build up into a resource that will aid family tree researchers to take that one step backwards in their journey.
If you see a Surname that you have found spelt differently please share it with us, a lot of Irish Surnames in my experience can have various spellings down the years!

Where did Irish settlers in Leicester live? Many of the streets and areas that they moved in to were designated as slum areas and have since been demolished but it is vital to know where they were situated and to see just what they looked like to understand the problems, hardships and everyday struggles that they endured to build up the picture of how they lived their lives here in Leicester.
If you have pictures of your relatives before they came here or after they came here i would love to share them on this page. If you have pictures of the homes that they lived here in in Leicester i would also like to share them. What work did they do when they got here? Did they feel pressured to anglicize their surname to fit in? Were there favourite pubs, clubs that they went to to meet up with fellow countrymen/women? Any information that you can share with me would be very helpful to other Irish ancestor searchers.
